Batch #5
Category: Energy and environmental technology, Thermochemical heat accumulator
Many private households will have to convert their heating supply to renewable sources in the coming years. In Germany alone, this will affect 20 million gas and oil heating systems. However, there are hardly any technologies that can provide climate-neutral heat in winter. DLR has developed a new type of thermochemical energy storage system based on lime for this purpose. The planned DLR spin-off Calogy aims to offer a storage system for the building sector and thus pave the way for a renewable heat supply. The technology is able to store large amounts of energy efficiently and cost-effectively over long periods of time. The storage system can be charged whenever renewable electricity is available at low cost. The stored energy remains free of thermal losses for weeks to months and is used to provide heating when it is discharged.
